In this post, I will share how to add an audio visualizer to a video, easy and free of charge. Here’s an example:
For that purpose, I use Microsoft Clipchamp video editing app. The web-based app is available on laptop and desktop computers through a web browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Currently, Clipchamp isn’t available on phones.
Here are the steps:
- In a web browser on your laptop or desktop go to https://app.clipchamp.com/
- Sign in to the Clipchamp app using one of the provided options like Microsoft or Google.
- Once you are signed in, click on the Create a new video button.

- Optionally, if you want to make a vertical phone-friendly video for TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts and similar, change the aspect ratio from the default 16:9 vertical 9:16 on the right side of the video preview area.

- Click on the Import media and in the file browser select the audio file you want to visualize. Alternatively, you can drag the file into the Drag and drop… area of the app.

- Once the file is uploaded to the app, drag and drop it from the left sidebar to the timeline located below the video preview window.

- On the left sidebar, click on the Content library icon.
- Click on the Visuals button and select Overlays from the menu.

- Drag the Audio Visualizer element to the Add video section on the timeline.
- You may have to use the timeline Zoom in option, if the audio visualizer element is too short on the timeline.

- Drag the right edge of the audio visualizer element to extend the element to the end of the audio file, so the whole length of the audio file is covered. Now, the visualizer should be visible in the video preview window.

- Optionally, click on the Audio visualizer element on the timeline and use the right sidebar to customize its color, size and position, or apply a visual filter. You can also choose whether you want the visualizer to have animated bars or just animated lines using the Transform option.

- If you want you can add more visuals and audio or text to the video by using the left sidebar buttons.
- Once you have finished creating the video, click on the Export button in the upper right corner of the screen as shown on the image above and select the desired video resolution to start downloading the created video to your computer.
That’s it. Your video with a visualized song, podcast, or other audio is now ready for upload from your computer to your profiles on social networks and every other purpose.
