Hi-hats and snares are often considered essential for driving rhythm and adding brightness. Yet when the goal is to create background music for video content, they can sometimes work against the purpose. Their sharp, repetitive texture may intrude on dialogue, clash with ambient sounds, or distract from the visual narrative. Choosing to omit hi-hats and snares can actually be a strategic advantage, allowing the music to blend seamlessly with the video rather than competing for attention.

For that purpose, I use Microsoft Clipchamp video editing app. The web-based app is available on laptop and desktop computers through a web browser like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Currently, Clipchamp isn’t available on phones.

(more…)While recording videos on my iPhone 11 with the default Camera app, I have been oftentimes experiencing a flickering problem. The flicker can be especially visible in bright video scene areas like skies or white walls when the lighting conditions in the scene change. For instance, when you move the focus of the camera from dark to bright areas of the scene or vice versa.
Many iPhone users report the same issue with other iPhone models, such as the iPhone 12 and 13 series. From watching phone camera videos on YouTube I have learned that some Android phones may have similar problem.
By the way, this flickering is different from the common flickering caused by LED light, which is fixable with the camera’s shutter speed change to match the frequency of the LEDs.

In all relevant video recording apps on iPhones and Android phones, as same as in modern real cameras, there are video recording quality settings featuring resolutions such as 1080p and 4K and frames-per-second (fps) rates such as 24, 30, and 60. Here I’ll try to explain simply what they mean in practice.

Today I tested how much different resolution and frame rate settings in video recording affect the battery life of an iPhone. The comparison was done on an iPhone 11. Video recording was done using all current resolution and frames-per-second (fps) settings available on the iPhone: 4K Ultra HD at 24, 30, and 60 fps, 1080p Full HD (named 1080p HD on the iPhone) at 60 and 30 fps, and 720p HD at 30 fps.
