On this page you can find out how to turn on or off Instagram notifications on Android phones by Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, Google, and others. The guide is applicable to phones with the current Android 12 version. On other recent Android versions the process is similar.
You can enable and disable Instagram notifications:
- in the Android phone settings and
- in the settings within the Instagram app itself.
In addition to turning the notifications on or off, in the Android phone settings you can customize the ways Instagram notifications appear on your phone. For instance, enabling and disabling:
- sounds and vibrations
- app icon badges, and
- “bubble” on-screen pop-ups.
Turn On or Off Instagram Notifications in Android Phone Settings
Here’s how to enable and disable all Instagram notifications or select Instagram notification categories in the Android phone settings.
Turn On or Off All Instagram Notifications in Android Phone Settings
To enable or disable all Instagram notifications together in Android phone Settings:
- Go to Android phone’s Settings / Notifications.
- If the Instagram option isn’t visible on the Notifications screen, tap on the More option below the shortened app list. The More option leads you to the App notifications screen with the full app list. If the Instagram option still isn’t visible, switch the list view from Most recent to All using the dropdown menu in the upper left part of the App notifications screen.
- In the Instagram section, toggle the Show Notifications switch on or off.
Alternatively, you can find the Instagram settings section by searching for “Instagram” in the Settings search box.
Also, you can access the Instagram notification settings via an Instagram notification you received in Android’s “notification shade” panel (if you already allowed Instagram notifications to appear there). You can access the shade by swiping down from the upper edge of the screen. Tap and hold an Instagram notification on the notification list to reveal the Settings option. Tap on the Settings option to go to the Instagram notification settings screen.
Turn On or Off Select Instagram Notifications by Category in Android Phone Settings
To enable or disable notification categories based on a specific Instagram feature such as direct messages, likes, or new followers:
- Go to Settings / Notifications.
- If the Instagram option isn’t visible on the Notifications screen, tap on the More option below the shortened app list. The More option leads you to the App notifications screen with the full app list. If the Instagram option still isn’t visible, switch the list view from Most recent to All using the dropdown menu in the upper left part of the App notifications screen.
- In the Instagram section, go to Notification categories.
- Toggle the on / off switch near each listed Instagram feature category on the screen to enable or disable it.
Turn On or Off Instagram Notifications in Instagram App
Besides managing Instagram notifications in the Android phone settings, you can also do it within the Instagram app. To do that go to Instagram app / Settings / Notifications.
Settings in the Instagram app, including those about notifications, can be accessed by:
- entering the Instagram profile via the profile icon in the lower right corner on the screen,
- then tapping on the three horizontal lines “hamburger” icon in the upper right corner, and
- selecting the Settings item on the menu that pops up.
Within the Instagram app settings, you can:
- Enable and disable, or more precisely pause and un-pause, all notifications. You can pause the notifications for only up to 8 hours. After the set period of time, Instagram notifications will automatically resume appearing on your phone.
- Enable or disable notification categories based on a specific Instagram feature such as notifications about direct messages, likes, new followers, or emails.
In the in-app Instagram settings you can’t manage the way the notifications appear on your phone regarding the sounds, vibrations, icon badges, pop-ups, or lock screen messages. You can do it in the Android phone settings, as described below.
Manage Instagram Notifications Sound and Appearance in Android Phone Settings
Besides enabling and disabling Instagram notifications, in Android phones’ Settings / Notifications / Instagram and Settings / Notifications / Instagram / Notification categories you can customize the way the notifications show up.
To manage the sound alerts, vibration, and app icon badges for all Instagram notifications together:
- Go to Settings / Notifications.
- If the Instagram option isn’t visible on the Notifications screen, tap on the More option below the shortened app list. The More option leads you to the App notifications screen with the full app list. If the Instagram option still isn’t visible, switch the list view from Most recent to All using the dropdown menu in the upper left part of the App notifications screen.
- In the Instagram section, use the buttons and switches on the screen to allow or disallow sound and vibrations and icon badges.
To manage the sound alerts, vibration, app icon badges, “bubble” pop-up notification messages, and appearance on the lock screen for selectable Instagram notification categories:
- Go to Settings / Notifications.
- If the Instagram option isn’t visible on the Notifications screen, tap on the More option below the shortened app list. The More option leads you to the App notifications screen with the full app list. If the Instagram option still isn’t visible, switch the list view from Most recent to All using the drop-down menu in the upper left part of the App notifications screen.
- Once you are in the Instagram section, go to Notification categories.
- Tap on an Instagram notification category you want to manage and use buttons and switches on the screen to manage notification sounds, vibrations, icon badges, pop-ups and appearance on the lock screen.
Note: This tip applies to Android 12 OS-powered phones from the Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other popular lineups.
