How to Rename Photos, Videos, Documents and Other Files on Android?

Renaming photos, videos, documents, and other files on Android phones is easy.

Here’s how to do that:

  • In the default Files by Google (or simply Files) app locate the file you want to rename. If the Files by Google isn’t installed, you can install it from the Play Store app.

  • In the Files app, tap and hold the file to select it and reveal the file options. These options, including Rename, are accessible via three vertically aligned dots in the upper right corner of the Files app.

  • Tap on the three dots and on the options menu and tap the Rename option.

  • In the name field, type a new name and tap OK to confirm it.

If you are using the List View instead of the Grid View in the Files app, there are the vertical 3-dot icons on the right side of each file on the list. You can access the Rename option by tapping these 3 dots, as an alternative to accessing it via the previously described tap-and-hold function.

The List / Grid View switch is located in the upper right corner of the Files app, between the search and the 3-dot icons.

Note: This tip applies to recent generations of Android OS-powered phones from the Samsung Galaxy, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Google Pixel, Motorola, and other popular lineups. Some phones like Samsung Galaxy have their own files apps like My Files. The procedure for renaming in them should be similar to the described above.
