How to Disable ‘Live Text’ Image-to-Text Scanning in iPhone Camera App?

The new Live Text feature on iPhone that allows you to extract text from images is a great tool. However, some users don’t use it often.

If enabled, this feature pops up every time you try to take a shot with the Camera app when there’s text on objects in front of the camera. Live Text scans the scene in front of you for text and enables you to copy and edit it. The feature shows up in the Camera app in the form of a paragraph-looking icon in the lower right corner of the picture frame if text is present in the scene. Also, there are yellow rectangle lines in corners surrounding the detected text on objects in the picture.

Thankfully, you can disable Live Text scanning in the Camera app settings if you don’t need the feature. Here’s how to do that:

  • Go to iPhone Settings / Camera and
  • turn off the Show Detected Text toggle switch.

The good thing is you can still extract text from pictures after you take them, even if the Show Detected Text was turned off at the time of the shot. You will be able to use Live Text on images that are already taken and stored by opening them in the Photos app. The only condition to do that is to have Live Text enabled in the iPhone Settings / General / Language and Region section.

The Live Text feature was introduced in 2021, in iOS version 15.

Note: This guide was tested on an iPhone with iOS 15. At the time of this writing, iOS 15 powers the majority of iPhone models, including the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE 2, XR and older compatible models.
