How to Turn On or Off Instagram Notifications on iPhone?

Here’s how to turn on or off Instagram notifications on an iPhone.

You can turn on or off:

All Instagram notifications.
Select Instagram notification types, such as notifications about new likes, comments, followers, or direct messages.
Instagram notifications based on the iPhone alert type. These are alerts on the iPhone Lock Screen, in Notification Center, or via Banners.

Instagram notifications are managed in the iPhone settings and in the settings within the Instagram app.

Turn On or Off All Instagram Notifications on iPhone

You can enable or disable all Instagram notifications via the iPhone settings or in the Instagram app settings.

Turn On or Off All Instagram Notifications in iPhone Settings

To turn on or off all Instagram notifications via the iPhone Settings, go to Settings / Instagram / Notifications. You can also search for “Instagram” in the Settings search box to find the Instagram settings section.

In the Instagram / Notifications settings section toggle the Allow Notifications switch on or off to enable or disable all Instagram notifications.

Turn On or Off All Notifications in Instagram App

Within the Instagram app, you can enable and disable, or more precisely pause, notifications. You can pause notifications for only up to 8 hours. After the set period of time, Instagram notifications will automatically resume appearing on your iPhone.

To pause or manually resume notifications within the Instagram app itself, go to the Instagram app’s Settings / Notifications and toggle the Pause All switch.

Where are Settings in Instagram App?

Settings in the Instagram app, including those about notifications, can be accessed by entering the Instagram profile via the profile icon in the lower right corner on the screen, then tapping on the three horizontal lines “hamburger” icon in the upper right corner, and selecting the Settings item on the menu that pops up.

Turn On or Off Select Instagram Notification Types

If you rather want a more granular control over what kind of Instagram notifications you receive, go to the notification settings in the app itself – Instagram app / Settings / Notifications.

The notification options in the app include:

Post, Stories, and Comments – In this section you can enable or disable notifications such as alerts about new likes on your posts, comments on your posts, about being tagged in other peoples’ posts, about first posts from people you follow and unspecified “other similar notifications”. Unfortunately, none of these options allow you to turn off the common “…recently added to their stories” notifications.
Following and Followers – Here you can manage notifications about new followers you get, accepted follow requests you sent, suggestions who to follow, and mentions in other peoples’ Instagram bio.
Messages and Calls – This section handles Instagram direct message notifications, including new messages, message requests from people you don’t follow, and message group requests, as well as video chat notifications, and room chat alerts.
Live on IGTV – Here you can manage notifications about your and others’ IGTV video streams.
Fundraisers – This group of options in the Instagram Settings allows you to turn on or off alerts about new donations to your Instagram fundraiser and about new fundraiser campaigns by the others.
From Instagram – In this section you have options to manage reminders about your unseen previous Instagram notifications and alerts on the iPhone, about unrecognized logins into your Instagram accounts, about support requests, and about product announcements and feedback.
Shopping – Shopping notifications let you know when accounts you follow add new products to their Instagram shops. You can also be notified about products and shops you may be interested in based on your Instagram activity.

In the Instagram app’s notification settings you can also specify choices about email notifications.

Turn On or Off Instagram Notifications Based on iPhone Alert Type (Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners)

In the iPhone Settings / Instagram / Notifications, you can select what type of iPhone alerts will be used to inform you about Instagram activity.

You can turn on or off notifications:

On the Lock Screen – Choose whether you want to see new Instagram notifications on the Lock Screen, without needing to unlock the phone.
In the Notification Center – This is the main area for notifications in the iPhone iOS operating system. On modern iPhones, the Notification Center can be accessed by swiping down from the upper left corner of the screen.
Via Banners – If enabled, these pop-up notification messages appear on the top of the screen for a few seconds.

To enable or disable one of these alert types, use the Lock Screen, Notification Center, and Banners check boxes on the Settings / Instagram / Notifications screen.

On the same screen, you can also enable or disable sound alerts for the Instagram notifications, as well as badges that appear on the Instagram app icon if there’s new activity.

Note

Some notification types that can be set within the Instagram app may be more important to you than the others, such as direct messages over new likes. But, the iPhone won’t let you set the lock screen, notification center, and banner alerts for them separately. You can only set them for the Instagram app as a whole.
